2 new students join Gay-Straight Alliance group

OKEECHOBEE — About two weeks after the ACLU said there were no longer any active members in the Gay-Straight Alliance group it represents, two new students have joined the club.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal suit against the Okeechobee County School Board in November 2006 on behalf of the Gay-Straight Alliance and its then-current president Yasmin Gonzalez saying the school was illegally barring the club from meeting on school grounds. A judge later ordered the school district to let the club meet at the school while the lawsuit is pending.

About two weeks ago, the ACLU agreed to drop the Gay-Straight Alliance from the lawsuit and let it proceed in the name of Gonzalez because the club’s last member left the school. On Tuesday, the ACLU said in court papers there was a new student, who graduates in 2009, who wants to take over the club and would like to join the lawsuit under the same terms as Gonzalez.
